  • ITINs are only required for federal tax reporting only
  • Possibly required for bank accounts and loans
  • Must file a Non-Resident Income Tax Return in joint
  • With an ITIN you can claim dependents you support in the US, Mexico, and Canada
  • Ability to obtain tax refund 
  • Does not authorize you to work in the US
  • Does not provide Social Security benefits nor Earned Income Tax Credit



 

As nonimmigrant NAFTA Professional (TN) this visa allows citizens of Canada and Mexico, as NAFTA professionals, to work in the United States in prearranged business activities for U.S. or foreign employers but Dependent children are not eligible for the SSN, unless they are born in the United States as citizens. Dependent and spouses may apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Under The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, enacted in December 2015, taxpayers who have not used their ITIN for a tax return in the last three years must renew their ITIN before filing a 2019 tax return. You must also renew your ITIN number if your number has middle digits 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, or 87.

The Tax Id numbers for renewal before December 31, 2022 are 88, 90,91,92,94,95,96,97,98 y 99 IF assigned before 2013, have expired.

All ITINs not used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three years 2019, 2020, 2021 will expire on December 31, 2022. (Information from IRS)
